Data Management & Marketing Services works with its clients to identify the market segments with the highest profit potential for their products and services. While it is important to look at the overall demographics of a company’s general market area, our strategy is to “drill down” to the lowest boundary possible to locate the best potential prospects for our client’s products and services.

This table compares the demographics of the city of Edmond, Oklahoma. The first column describes some characteristics of Edmond as a whole. The second column displays characteristics of Edmond zip 73013. The last two columns compare demographics of two neighborhoods within zip 73013. There are significant differences between the market segments that are obvious when looking at the data in aggregate. By studying demographics at the neighborhood level, we develop a plan to strategically market to those prospects that are most likely to purchase your products and services.

This thematic map shows Edmond 73012 with an income overlay. The darker the shade of green, the higher the income. The chart above shows other demographic variables within the individual neighborhoods and how they differ greatly even within the same zipcode.

We use maps and demographics in location analysis and marketing to more precisely select areas to mico-target for direct mail, billboard placement, and other marketing efforts.

“BEST” customers are those who have:

a) Bought from you recently

b) Buy frequently

c) Spend alot of money on your products & services.

One of the best, if not THE best tool to understanding who your BEST customers are is Recency, Frequency, and Monetary or RFM Analysis. RFM Analysis is a tool that is used to segment your customers into clusters based on their buying behavior. Depending on the size of the database, customers are assigned a ranking number between 1 & 3 or 1 & 5 for each RFM parameter. The three scores are assigned to a RFM cell with 333 or 555 being the highest.

I take this a step further by then assigning each RFM Cell to a Tier – either A, B, or C. We then use these tiers to develop marketing programs that strengthen the relationship (Tier A), build the relationship (Tier B), and review the relationship (Tier C).

RFM coding should be calculated on a monthly or quarterly basis in order to leverage the highest benefit from your database. Calculating RFM and integrating it with a active strategy of regular communications with your customers will prove most profitable.
